AG Bell Listening and Spoken Language Specialist Certification

The AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language certification program sets standards for knowledge and skills essential to helping children with hearing loss learn to listen and communicate with spoken language (AG Bell Academy, 2012). Listening and spoken language specialists (LSLS TM) are certified by the AG Bell Academy only after (1) completion of an approved degree, (2) successfully completing 3 – 5 years work with certified LSLS mentors, and (3) passing a written examination in English. (

 As a mentor, programmes are designed to meet individual needs and build upon existing strengths. A typical programme will include each year:

  • Monthly, Mentee provides a filmed one hour video session for feedback
  • Monthly, Mentor provides two filmed sessions via Vimeo
  • Monthly, one hour mentoring session via skype or facetime
  • Bi-monthly one hour webinar for professional learning, CEU’s from AG Bell provided topics include, goal setting, speech production, acoustics and parent guidance
  • Yearly, visit to host country under arrangement

Lyndsey is mentoring us towards LSLS Certification, she watches videos of our therapy and guides us to identify goals to work on. Her feedback is practical so really works in practice, she makes AVT easier to understand. Her wide experience and knowledge is of great benefit and we are learning a lot.
